(What's Wrong With) Baby Blue?

about

This was the first song written for Jonah. It was written overnight on the day he was born. My wife, Holly, was fast asleep after giving birth to him and I was trying to get him to stop crying. All that worked was singing to him. In my panic, I couldn't remember any songs to sing, so kept singing this chorus over and over again - the words "Baby Blue" fresh in my mind having just recorded a song of the same title with Dennis Cantagallo of Dead Samaritans/ten indians (who also let some guitar parts in the last part of the solo). The song turned into an ode to 70's T-Rex glam rock, with a twist of Marilyn Manson. In a strange twist on the lyrics, a few days prior to recording this song, former World Champion wrestler Dusty Rhodes passed away. In tribute to "The American Dream", I re-wrote one verse to include a few lines from one of his most famous promos.

lyrics

I've been a sinner
O I have sinned
I've been a loser but I know how to win
The white noise
And white lines
I've skipped the tolls but avoided the fines

Never remembered one single day
Until the day I heard you cry

What's wrong with baby blue?
Oh tell me what'd I do
What's wrong with baby blue now?
Feels like the weight of the world tonight
Must be why I fell for you

You got me racing
You got me turned
Dancing with fire, trying not to get burned
A few tears
A few mistakes
But I ain't perfect man, and those are the breaks

Never remembered one single day
Until the day I heard you cry

What's wrong with baby blue?
Oh tell me what'd I do
What's wrong with baby blue now?
Feels like the weight of the world tonight
Must be why I fell for you

I've dined with kings
I've danced with queens
I've slept in alleys eating pork and beans
So hear me baby
And listen good
You gotta go for it 'cause life tastes good

Never remembered one single day
Until the day I heard you cry
